1.
What is News?
News is is information
about a recently changed situation or a recent event. News is current events, important or interesting
recents happening or it can be simply define as information about such events,
that can be person, fashion, etc, widely reported in the mass media or even not.
2. Elements of news are
proximity, prominence, timelines, oddity, consequence, human interest, humor,
define each element and give each an example of headline?
Proximity: This has to do
with location. If the event is happening close by, it will impact your readers more than if it is happening
across town, or across the world, all other considerations being equal. For example,
journalists assess the value of a news item reporting tragic deaths by
comparing the number of deaths with the distance from the home community.
For
instance:
§
If 1,000 persons drown in a flood in a faraway
country, the story has about the same news value as a story describing how 100
persons drowned in a distant part of the United States.
§
In turn, that 100 person story has about the
same news value as a story concerning 10 flood victims within our own state.
§
Finally, a story about those ten victims has
about the same value as a story describing a flood that drowns one person in
our local community.
Prominence: This has to do
with how well known the people involved in your story are. If the person or
persons are well known to your readers, the story will impact your readers more
than a similar story involving people they do not know.
Example: EXCLUSIVE ANNOUNCEMENT: new Bruno Mars Single
"It Will Rain" from The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 Original
Motion Picture Soundtrack
Mars fans and connoisseurs of "Twilight" must
wait for the song to be played until September 27.
The announcement was made following the success of the
singer and songwriter in gaining Grammy and the debut of his debut album
"Doo-Wops and Hooligans" on the US and world charts.
The number "It Will Rain" will be released on
September 27.
All soundtrack songs for "Breaking Dawn - Part
1" will be available on iTunes on November 8.
Timeliness: Current news has more impact than
something that happened yesterday or last week. The news media loses interest
in past events because there is always fresh news somewhere.
Example: Elon Musk's 'difficult and painful' 2018
The Tesla founder confessed that the past year
was excruciating in an emotional interview that led to stocks falling sharply.
Here’s a look back on his 2018
Oddity: Things that are
unusual, weird or strange are also interesting. Or if something happens for the
first time, last time or only time, it is odd and therefore newsworthy.

The small village of Dino a, in
Montenegro, is home to an old mulberry tree that turns into a water fountain
every time it rains heavily.
As we all know, water doesnt normally
gush out of living trees, but at least in this case the phenomenon has a
perfectly reasonable explanation. You see, the meadow that the mulberry tree
grows in has many underground springs which flood during heavy rainfalls, and
the additional pressure pumps the water up through the hollow trunk of the tree
and out through a hole a few feet above the ground.
Consequences: If the impact of an event may directly
affect readers, they will want to know about it.
Example: A run-of-the-mill burglary at the Watergate Hotel was white
noise on the airwaves until it became clear what the identities of the key
players meant for the nation. That bit of news cost a U.S. President his seat.
Human interest: If a
situation draws any sort of emotional reaction, then it might contain the news
element of a human-interest story. These stories can be "soft"
kid-at-the-petting-zoo snapshots, inspiring comeback accounts or infuriating
reports of incompetence on the part of a public figure.
Example: Historic
Flooding in Nebraska, Missouri and Iowa Leaves 3 Dead and 2 Missing
Parts
of Nebraska, Missouri and Iowa are experiencing disastrous flooding as a result
of heavy rains and snow melt that has killed at least three people and left two
others missing.
Humor: People
like to laugh, so some incidents that is humorous is likely to be reported.
Example: Cops: Burglar
Frying Bacon Caught when Owner Returns
A woman who returned to her home found a man inside
who was frying bacon on her stove and in possession of several personal items,
according to police in suburban St. Louis.
Damon Petty, 36, was charged with burglary after
his arrest Tuesday at the home of Kenya Ealy in University City.
Ealy and a female friend had returned to the home
and at first were unable to enter when Petty tried to keep the door closed,
according to stltoday.com.
The two eventually got in and detained him until
police arrived.
3. What is hard news?
Hard news is a
term most often used by journalists and others who work in the media industry,
though you may hear others outside the industry use the term. Hard news is the
kind of fast-paced news that usually appears on the front page of newspapers.
Stories that fall under the umbrella of hard news often deal with topics like
business, politics and international news. Hard news usually takes on a factual
approach that explains what happened, who the main people involved were and
where and when everything happened and why.
4.
What is soft news?
Up-to-the-minute news and events that require immediate reporting are
considered hard while features and news that is considered background
information or human-interest are thought of as soft news. The arts,
entertainment and lifestyle stories are considered to be soft news in nature. soft
news requires a different approach to lead writing and are often called delayed
leads because they start telling a story before getting to the main facts.
Soft-news lead-ins tend to be narrative or anecdotal in nature, where they tell
a story instead of stating important facts. Soft news stories can be presented
in a variety of ways, but they usually try to entertain or advise the reader in
some way. Listicles, like "Top 10 Ways to Stretch After a Run to Ease
Lactic Acid," are considered soft news, as are more in-depth entertainment
features, such as the lives and scandals of famous politicians.
5. You are as a
journalist do an observation then write
about what you see!
Visiting
Cipondoh Lake at night
Cipondoh Lake is located in
front of the Cipondoh District Office, Jalan KH. Hasyim Ashari, Cipondoh, Kota
Tangerang. Lake Cipondoh is a tourist location that is perfect for visitors who
want to relax while clearing their minds. Cipondoh Lake presents amazing
natural beauty.
On this lake there are also
recreational facilities for floating ducks paddled, water bikes, and also boats
that can take visitors around the lake. There are also playgrounds for children
such as swings, mini trains, to slides. Many people visit this lake during the
day, then what is the view of Cipondoh Lake
at night?
The view of Cipondoh Lake
remains beautiful at night. Even more beautiful at night in my opinion. The
view of the lights from the far side of the lake looks glittering to adorn the
city of Tangerang. The reflection of this light made the ripples from the lake
water more beautiful. In addition, evening culinary tours are available at
Cipondoh Lake , there are meatballs, chicken noodles, and others. Visiting
CipondohLake at night makes our minds
calmer because it is more quiet than visiting this lake in a busy and noisy
daytime.
6. Research the history
of political cartooning and prepare a visual project showing how cartoons have
emergeed as important commentary on the issue of the day?
History of
Political Cartooning
An editorial cartoon, also known as a political cartoon, is a drawing
containing a commentary expressing the artist's opinion. An artist who writes
and draws such images is known as an editorial cartoonist. They typically
combine artistic skill, hyperbole and satire in
order to question authority and draw attention to corruption, political violence and other social ills.
Developed in England in the latter part of the 18th century, James Gillray was
a pioneer of the political cartoon. Founded in 1841, the British
periodical Punch appropriated the term cartoon to
refer to its political cartoons, which led to the term's widespread use.
he pictorial satire has been credited as the precursor to the political
cartoons in England: John J. Richetti, in The Cambridge history of English
literature, 1660–1780, states that "English graphic satire really begins
with Hogarth's Emblematical Print on the South Sea Scheme". William Hogarth’s pictures combined social
criticism with sequential artistic scenes. A frequent target of his satire was
the corruption of early 18thcentury British politics. An early satirical work
was an Emblematical Print on the South Sea Scheme (c.1721), about the
disastrous stock market crash of 1720 known as the South Sea Bubble, in which
many English people lost a great deal of money.
His art often had a strong moralizing element to it, such as in his
masterpiece of 1732–33, A Rake's Progress, engraved in 1734. It consisted of
eight pictures that depicted the reckless life of Tom Rakewell, the son of a
rich merchant, who spends all of his money on luxurious living, services from
sex workers, and gambling—the character's life ultimately ends in Bethlem Royal
Hospital.
However, his work was only tangentially politicized and was primarily
regarded on its artistic merits. George Townshend, 1st Marquess Townshend
produced some of the first overtly political cartoons and caricatures in the
1750s.
The medium began to develop in England in the latter part of the 18th
century—especially around the time of the French Revolution—under the direction
of its great exponents, James Gillray and Thomas Rowlandson, both from London.
Gillray explored the use of the medium for lampooning and caricature, and has
been referred to as the father of the political cartoon. Calling the king, prime ministers and
generals to account, many of Gillray's satires were directed against George
III, depicting him as a pretentious buffoon, while the bulk of his work was
dedicated to ridiculing the ambitions of Revolutionary France and Napoleon. The
times in which Gillray lived were peculiarly favourable to the growth of a
great school of caricature. Party warfare was carried on with great vigour and
not a little bitterness; and personalities were freely indulged in on both
sides. Gillray's incomparable wit and humour, knowledge of life, fertility of
resource, keen sense of the ludicrous, and beauty of execution, at once gave
him the first place among caricaturists.
George Cruikshank became the leading cartoonist in the period following
Gillray (1820s–40s). His early career was renowned for his social caricatures
of English life for popular publications. He gained notoriety with his
political prints that attacked the royal family and leading politicians and was
bribed in 1820 "not to caricature His Majesty" (George IV) "in
any immoral situation". His work included a personification of England
named John Bull who was developed from about 1790 in conjunction with other
British satirical artists such as Gillray and Rowlandson.
Political cartoons can usually
be found on the editorial page of many newspapers, although a few (such as
Garry Trudeau's Doonesbury) are sometimes placed on the regular comic strip
page. Most cartoonists use visual metaphors and caricatures to address
complicated political situations, and thus sum up a current event with a
humorous or emotional picture.
Yaakov Kirschen, creator of
the Israeli comic strip Dry Bones, says his cartoons are designed to make
people laugh, which makes them drop their guard and see things the way he does.
In an interview, he defined his objective as a cartoonist as an attempt to
"seduce rather than to offend."
A political cartoon commonly
draws on two unrelated events and brings them together incongruously for
humorous effect. The humour can reduce people's political anger and so serves a
useful purpose. Such a cartoon also reflects real life and politics, where a
deal is often done on unrelated proposals beyond public scrutiny.
